As a graduate of the University of the Sunshine Coast I completed a grad year on an orthopaedic surgical in-patient unit at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
I am forever grateful that an insightful colleague encouraged me to apply for a second-year grad position in the Emergency Department. It felt like I had to re-learn the intricate workings of a speciality area of nursing; like I was taking a step backwards in order to take two steps forward.
However, it was in the ED that I truly felt I gained an understanding of what it means to be a nurse in an increasingly busy and technical field. I continue to work in Emergency Departments as an agency nurse, travelling this beautiful country with my partner, Janke.
Before I started nursing, I was an expedition white water rafting guide and medic. I continue to advocate strongly for the therapeutic value of time spent in nature. If you want to find me outside of work, I will probably be cooking up a storm after a surf on an isolated beach somewhere.
